You Need to Have a Life

Years ago, my husband was at a loss for a Christmas gift for his boss. His boss/mentor already had everything. He was also extremely busy and revered in his professional community. What do you get someone like that? Then it dawned on him. Something clever and witty. (Luckily, they both shared the same sense of humor.) Under his direction, I bought a bottle of dried thyme and wrapped it. My husband wrote on the card, "Even a well-seasoned surgeon could use a little more thyme." His boss LOVED it.

Even a well-seasoned MOM could also use a little more thyme. Hence the name of my blog.

Every time I've made an attempt to start a blog over the years, I have always thought: "I don't have anything to write about." I'm not an expert in any subject. My all-time favorite writing teacher once said, "If you want to be a writer, you can't just sit at home all day in front of your computer. You need to have a life, so you can write about it."

Some may argue that a stay-at-home mom doesn't have a life. We often feel like we don't with the same routines every day, the amount of time spent shuttling kids around and bound by nap times. Though that may be true at different points, the life of a SAHM is also completely unpredictable. Like when you hear the screams, see the blood and know the rest of your day's plans just got wiped clean to go sit in the E.R. waiting for stitches.

I have always loved to write, and I've got some bylines to prove it. My dad also loved to write. We were often each other's editors on our various projects. He taught me a lot about comedic timing, how to look for the humor in life and to not take myself so seriously. I can still hear him in my head every time I have a funny observation or a stroke of inspiration I need to write down. He loved the quote, "A short pencil is better than a long memory." He passed away in late 2024.

Inspired by my dad and encouraged by my mom, this isn't just another recipe blog. It's a collection of my humorous adventures learning how to cook despite my food critics. It's a curated list of other food blog recipes my family loves and some of my own recipes for even my pickiest child.

Keeping our kids fed EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. (and every single hour of the day) is no small feat. If once you say, "It's time for bed!" and you hear, "I'm still hungry!" you've come to the right place. Let's do this together!
